2022 Clara Barton IHL Competition
Application is CLOSED

The American Red Cross, in partnership with the Clara Barton Committee and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), is proud to announce the 9th Annual Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Competition. The Clara Barton IHL Competition (CBC) is an opportunity to bring together leading IHL practitioners, military academy cadets, and law students to explore this fascinating area of law.

Unlike traditional moot court competitions, the CBC strives to bring the law out of the books by allowing students to explore the application of the law through fictional but realistic role-playing armed conflict scenarios that continue to evolve throughout the Competition. The Competition tests participants’ knowledge of IHL as well as their ability to present, advocate for, and defend legal positions to a diverse range of stakeholders in different simulated environments.

Though times are uncertain, we are hoping to hold the 2022 Competition in person from Friday, March 4, 2022 – Sunday, March 6, 2022 at the American Red Cross National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. We are prepared to conduct the Competition via Zoom if necessary, and will inform teams if and when that decision is made.

This year’s application will be made available here, on our website on September 13, 2021. The application deadline is November 15, 2021. The application fee is $50 and is due at the time teams submit their application. Selected teams will be notified in early December, and must inform the Competition Committee of their commitment to participate by paying a non-refundable participation fee of $1,000. Teams may be eligible for a participation fee waiver. Information regarding this waiver will be available after the application goes live. The participation fee will be waived for all teams if the competition will be held remotely.

For more information, or if you have any questions about the Competition, please feel free to email the Competition Committee at ClaraBartonIHL@redcross.org.
